Well, I've got to say I think a couple of you pulled the trigger too early on RP's there. No doubt they are the two best RP's in the league, but I'm pretty sure I didn't draft Papelbon until the 8/9 round last year, maybe even a bit later, and I remember thinking then that I might have gone too early.

There's not a snowball in hell's chance that you drafted Papelbon beyond the fourth round last year - he was one of the top closers in the game even then. Bluejays and I gambled on the top closers for the very simple reason that all the good ones would likely be gone by the time it came back to us.
Best of luck hoping to get anyone half decent in round 5 or beyond!

I am virtually certain that he wasn't in the fourth round, I'd really put 7/8 as my safe bet. He certainly wasn't the first pitcher I went for (I gambled on Dice-K). I don't see a need to rush for closers, there are probably 4 very good ones, but the difference between the very good and the good ones really isn't that great. Every team will give you a reasonable number of saves, k contribution is minimal for most, although they can hurt you in WHIP and ERA. Obviously you disagree, I just don't see a point in drafting RP's high up.

I stand corrected - according to the Draft Results on Yahoo for last year, you took Papelbon with the second pick of Round 8. I did wonder if he was drafted as a starter last year, which affected his status, and that must have been the case.
But...K-Rod was the first closer to go, 11th in Round 2, then Nathan (3rd), Rivera (4th) in Round 3, and Wagner, Ryan, Street in Round 4. In other words, if you want a top closer, you take one early. You can get a reasonable amount of saves from every team, but the contributions in K and ERA and WHIP over a season are important - especially if you draft Joe Borowski!

i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree and see what happens over the course of the season. I drafted papelbon as a closer though.

I think you thought he was a closer, but he was umming and ahhing for a while before deciding to remain a closer, cause I remember thinking that you had got lucky drafting him that late! Good to see a former champion with Alex Rodriguez as his first round pick playing it safe!

In a 16-team league, don't think it's terribly excessive to take a closer with the 30th pick of the draft, especially someone like K-Rod, who contributes handily to Ks, WHIP and ERA as well.
There's plenty people been taken who will contribute strongly in only one or two categories and average in others. I'd certainly put Papelbon/K-Rod and possibly a couple others in the same draft bracket as the likes of Ichiro, Carlos Lee etc.
Closers are one of the more scarce resources, and in a good week where they log three saves or more then they're demons to have on your side in a H2H set-up.

Yeah, but I know Mike is picking for him, so I hope that he has been paying attention to who he has been drafting for SOMEONE ELSE. I don't know if they've actually discussed each draft pick. If not, he'll be ready for a trade come the end of the draft...perfect for me
